Summary
Working with WYSIWYG has completely changed how I approach lighting and stage design in my projects. This all-in-one Software suite delivers a multi-award-winning, integrated solution that streamlines the entire design process, from the initial drawing and pre-visualization to the final setup. I especially appreciate how it allows me to visualize every detail of a show, whether it’s theater, film, TV, live shows, conferences, or museums, and manage CAD plots, data, and virtual control in one program. The library is extensive and backed with resources that make starting and finishing designs faster and more efficient, giving me the power to create professional lighting and stage layouts seamlessly.
In practical terms, WYSIWYG helps AV teams and designers coordinate lighting, architecture, and technical setup without missing a beat. I have used it across multiple shows and productions, and the ability to integrate all aspects from start to finish has saved countless hours. Production design becomes a smoother experience as the software delivers accurate plots, data, and control, letting me focus on creativity rather than technical hurdles. Every show benefits from the precise detail and real-time visualization, making WYSIWYG not just a tool, but an essential part of modern lighting design.
Powerful Console Integration
In my experience, it allows Users to manage lighting, console, and Controllers seamlessly within one software environment. From Perform to Perform Lite, the program supports previsualization, playback, and sequences, letting you plan every show with precise tracks and patching. The library is massive, with over 8,000+ fixtures, enabling quick integration, enhancing layout, palette, and overall workflow for both professional and student projects. Data, reports, and diagrams are automatically tracked, ensuring every cue and effect is accounted for in your design.
Comprehensive Visualization Tools
WYSIWYG shines with its 3D visualization capabilities, allowing Users to view, enhance, and extend lighting effects on stage or room layouts. You can import images, slides, and Elements into the Viewer, and apply textures, colorizing, or motion paths for Objects. The software also supports advanced previsualization, helping to visualize Sequences and playback in real-time. This integrated approach streamlines planning, patching, and documentation, making production management fast and efficient.
Streamlined Workflow
With WYSIWYG, workflow becomes organized and focused. Every layout, diagram, and note can be edited, enhanced, or customized. The console outputs are connected to visualizer tools, allowing Users to control, track, and manage lighting effects across multiple scenes. Integration of tables, properties, and accounts ensures robust management of equipment and actions, letting both Students and professionals work accurately without missing details.
Flexible Production Management
From start to finish, it provides a comprehensive and accessible solution for planning, playback, and patching projects. The software allows enhancing, tracking, and integrating Elements, paths, and effects into your layout. It supports multiple Sequences, lights, and Objects, giving Users the option to extend, experiment, and customize each scene according to the production requirements.
Education and Practical Use
For Students, it offers a modern, interactive environment to experiment, enhance, and integrate skills in lighting and design. By accessing the library, visualizer, and robust workflow tools, they can practice patching, playback, and previsualization on realistic scenes. This approach enhances learning, helps develop accurate planning, and prepares them for professional industry requirements while keeping projects organized and efficient.
Advanced Fixture Management
One of the standout features in it is how Users can Distribute Fixtures Between Two Points, including Floor-Inserted units, making it easy to plan a show precisely. The ability to export Truss objects.DXF or DWG as complete 3D models with cylindrical chords and cross-members saves a lot of time. Custom Library Items that are created from imported models at the Application Level remain smoothed and retain all textures and Normal Maps, allowing Objects to appear realistic with Self-shadows and continuous tilt for laser units like Minuit Une.
Enhanced Visualization
The Shaded View and Sketch option now includes new modes such as Color and Color Fixtures, which let objects display in their layer’s colour. The classic black-on-white Default option has been renamed, and Invert is now called Black Background. LED-based tube and strip-type fixtures now have improved visualization, along with frost, diffusion, and gel effects. Each Sphere or Riser has reflective surfaces, now up to 20, giving a realistic look for live shows.
Library and Export Updates
The MVR Library has been updated to version 1.5, allowing Fixture weights to be exported efficiently. Hang structures and Position Names are now properly managed in the MVR Export dialog, and empty DMX Universes can be Purged. The CTRL+SHIFT+D keyboard shortcut for Distribute Between Two Points remains a useful feature. Pan Circles can be set to the colour of the layer, and Designer Tools, Cuts, and Adjustments now have improved docking behaviour.
Texturing and Laser Updates
Texturing Curved Surfaces is now possible using Extruded arcs and splines, allowing Users to create curved surfaces textured with a single image or video source. This was highlighted by Jason Gardash, a Freelance Lighting Designer & Programmer, who emphasized using a key-map for output from media servers. Image Textures with Alpha Transparency now improve effects, performance, and efficiency, while complex shapes can be textured directly in CAD. Laser Beams are volumetric, brighter, and faster, performing well in LIVE mode.
Truss and LED Improvements
The New Truss Manager with Truss Mirroring allows Users to mirror truss structures and manage properties like truss thickness from one centralized window. LED Walls and Screens now support Subsources, and the Quick Video/Image tool can auto patch video and image subsources to individual screens or LED panels, making production smoother and more reliable.
Import and Reporting Enhancements
Users can now Import Fixtures from Spreadsheet Lists (CSV, XLS, XLSX) exported from software or lighting consoles, streamlining the drawing process. Floorplan Imports now support Front/Back, Side Views, and Left/Right views using PDF or image files. The Fixture Fill Update Colors feature uses a calculation formula incorporating Saturation and Intensity, producing lighter fill colors for easier reading and printing. Across CAD and library modes, wysiwyg R38 added 187 fixtures, along with gobos, accessories, and other updates or corrections to older fixtures.
